ALi partners with Conax to launch Cardless solution

September 16, 2013

ALi Corporation, a Set-Top Box solution provider, has revealed that ALi’s family of STB chipsets will be the first chipsets to support the new Conax Cardless solution for STBs. To enable rapid development of Cardless STBs, Conax and ALi offer a reference design where the security core of Conax Cardless is embedded. The comprehensive ALi reference design will provide fast-time-to-market and offer easy implementation to various STB vendors.

Conax Cardless is a conditional access product where the CA client runs inside a purpose-built secure area of the STB chipset instead of in a physical smart card – providing hardware root of trust. The high level of security provided by Conax Cardless has been made possible by utilising the very latest technology in STB chipsets providing sufficient hardware security mechanisms to enable secure implementation of the CA client.

“Why launch Cardless CA now?” says Tom Jahr, EVP Products & Partners, Conax. “Conax security solutions have always been software based. We have chosen smart cards as a means to distribute and protect our software. This is the most secure way, and Conax has been and will always be extremely focused on security. Recent development in chipset technology has introduced STB chipsets with increased security to a level where we as Conax are comfortable. This has now enabled us to launch a Cardless solution inside a purpose-built secure area of the chipset – and under Conax brand.”

Daniel Huang, Chief Operating & Technology Officer at ALi, states, “Security is a critical requirement for digital entertainment systems, and therefore is a key focus for ALi. As a global leader in STB technology, ALi has been highly devoted to having innovative architecture and implementation of STB SOC for enhancing security capabilities. Our efforts and achievements are once again recognised with ALi’s chipsets chosen as the first to launch Conax Cardless CA.”
