Time Warner Cable (which serves much of New York City and Los Angeles) has agreed to carry Al Jazeera America. TWC’s New York and LA customers will get the Qatar-backed news channel by the end of this year while other TWC subscribers will get coverage by the spring of 2014. TWC has 11.7 million connected homes.

Al Jazeera America has been on air since August 20th having bought Al Gore-backed Current TV in January 2013 for a reported $500 million. Al Jazeera America wanted access to Current TV’s connected homes.

Today, the news channel is available to some 44 million US homes (and is distributed by Comcast and Verizon FiOS as well as DirecTV and Dish Network). Al Jazeera America is currently in a legal action against AT&T’s U-verse operation arguing that AT&T backed out of a binding agreement to carry the channel. U-verse says the broadcaster had breached certain terms of their agreement.
