Radio Times DiscoverTV app for content discovery

November 6, 2013

UK TV listings publication Radio Times has launched Radio Times DiscoverTV App, a new daily TV and radio recommendations and discovery service designed to help viewers discover favourite programmes wherever they are – on TV, catch-up or on-demand.

The App aims to cut through the ever-increasing broadcast choices with daily categorised recommendations to the best TV and radio, in-depth TV and film reviews, video content and customised programme listings.

Available on iPad and optimised for iOS7, Radio Times DiscoverTV is a freemium app with a 30-day free trial of the premium features. A free limited service is available without subscription with easy-to use, 14-day customised TV and radio listings, by provider and location, and basic programme information.

The premium service includes the above plus:
* Distinctive Radio Times Recommendations Wheel to navigate through the app quickly and easily
* More daily recommendations and reviews than any other TV guide from a dedicated editorial team; including Top 10 Programmes to Watch Tonight and 5 Best for your TV Package
* Daily round-up and links to the best programmes on catch-up and on-demand services
* Extensive reviews to the best films on TV and catch-up
* Reminder tool so you never miss your favourite shows
* Video content including trailers, clips, interviews and daily entertainment news
* Direct access to programmes on 4oD and BBC iPlayer
* Detailed programme information including cast and crew details

Ben Preston, Radio Times Editor, said the app was the first app designed for the way viewers watch television now. “This is a golden age for quality television. Viewers have never enjoyed so much choice. But we want to make it easier to find the good stuff. Everyday Radio Times DiscoverTV will guide you to the very best programmes – whether they’re on the traditional main channels, iPlayer, 4OD or new services like Netflix – and help you discover your next favourite show. At Radio Times we are determined to reinvent journalism about broadcasting, make the most of new digital technologies and make life easier for our readers.”

Radio Times DiscoverTV App is the latest addition to Radio Times’ digital portfolio. Following increased investment since becoming part of Immediate Media Co, the special interest content and platform company, in November 2011, RadioTimes.com has experienced phenomenal growth with record numbers of people visiting the site each month; over 3.5 million in October 2013, a 65 per cent increase year on year.

Tom Bureau, CEO Immediate Media Co, said the company’s mission was to develop its magazines into full multi-platform content brands with many revenue streams. “This requires us to develop our brands with world class scaled digital products based on the strength of our market positions. In its 90th year, the launch of Radio Times DiscoverTV re-imagines Radio Times for a new digital audience. We have created a product to delight a new generation of consumers around TV entertainment, combining guidance, discovery, and functionality. This is an important step on our journey to create the future model for magazine media.”

The Radio Times DiscoverTV launches initially on iPad and will then be rolled out across other mobile and tablet platforms, with enhanced functionality, thereafter. It is available on iTunes for £2.99 (€3.53) a month or £28.99 a year.

Radio Times was first published by the BBC in London on September 28th 1923. Owned by Immediate Media Co since 2011, it has over 3 million monthly visitors to RadioTimes.com.
