Oxygen Broadband Begins shipment of its Ikanos-based multiGateway platform

April 8, 2015

Ikanos Communications, a provider of advanced broadband semiconductor and software products for the connected home, has announced that Oxygen Broadband, a provider of broadband gateways to the residential and SOHO/SME markets, has started shipping its Ikanos-based multiGateway (DSL + LTE) platform to one of the largest carriers in Europe, with deployment expected in the second quarter of this year. The hybrid access in this new gateway will enable enhanced broadband connectivity in data rates and subscriber coverage. Oxygen Broadband, a long-time partner of Ikanos, has been shipping its Fusiv®-based gateways to top European carriers covering six countries.

As observed at this year’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, hybrid wireline-wireless broadband access is an emerging trend with top global carriers operating both networks. Oxygen Broadband’s new Ikanos-based gateway is designed to enable carrier adoption and deployment of such hybrid access services to the residential and SOHO markets. This industry-leading technology allows both wireline (ADSL, VDSL, Fiber, or Ethernet WAN) and wireless (3G, 4G/LTE) links to be deployed simultaneously using a single gateway processor – extending broadband data rates to subscribers – while dynamically managing the traffic on each link. This technology can also be used by carriers to enhance subscriber coverage.

The dual-WAN functionality of Fusiv® network processors highlights the raw performance achievable in a gateway processor that supports DSL and LTE links simultaneously. Thanks to its powerful acceleration processor subsystem, the Fusiv® Vx185 enables the current Oxygen Broadband platform to support aggregate data rates of up to 200Mbps of wireless broadband connectivity, while providing full-rate vectoring VDSL connectivity. The distributed processing capabilities of the Fusiv® architecture allow for additional offload for carrier-grade voice, security, and high-performance WiFi, including 802.11ac.

“Carrier demand for the next innovation in residential gateways is burgeoning, not only to satisfy consumer demand, but to deliver truly differentiated offerings,” said Konstantinos Boutsinis, CEO of Oxygen Broadband s.a. “At the same time, dual-mode DSL and LTE is emerging as the next technology to extend the rate and reach in broadband connectivity. Ikanos’ Fusiv® gateway processors provide us with the right mix of performance and flexibility to address such emerging trends in a differentiated way.”

“Hybrid wireline-wireless broadband connectivity is emerging as a key enabling technology for extending subscriber rate and reach,” said Kourosh Amiri, vice president of marketing at Ikanos. “Based on our market-leading Fusiv® processor, the Oxygen multiGateway platform is a major leap forward in enabling deployment of hybrid broadband access, while at the same time creating an immediate service upgrade opportunity for carriers as we continue to deliver increased innovation through our Fusiv® line of gateway processors.”
