Italy cup final in 4K and HFR/HDR

May 19, 2015

The Coppa Italia cup final between Juventus and Lazio on May 20th (being played at the Olympic Stadium in Rome) will be captured in Ultra HD and with High Dynamic Range (HDR) cameras and in 50 frames/per second.

The production is being handled on behalf of Italy’s Lega Serie A and Infront Italy, and being shot by Rome-based DBW Productions.  The producers say this is the first time HDR has been employed for a complete football match.

The game will, in fact, be captured in two 4K versions. The first version will shoot the final in Standard Dynamic Range, which is currently used on most 4K displays in the market. The other version will utilise the ‘better pixels’ option of HDR and will be used as an industry test to compare and contrast the results.

Suitable HDR displays are now beginning to appear in shops and most observers expect these to better handle colour depth and visibly allow viewers to see significant image improvements in both extreme light and extreme dark parts of the picture.

Infront Media is the Swiss-based sports marketing company.
