The Palestine Authority on June 18th launched a new TV channel, Palestine 48. The channel is targeting Israel’s Arab minority residents, some 20 per cent of the population, and will be broadcast via satellite.
However, the plan immediately came under fire from Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said that he had instructed Israel’s Communications Ministry (which he also heads) to examine the channel for possible criminal and other administrative measures to prevent the channel from getting on air.
Palestinian Communications Minister Riad Hassan said that “neither Netanyahu nor his extreme right-wing government will succeed in shutting down the station”.
