In addition to the pay-TV football price war, Spain’s telcos, Telefonica, Vodafone and Orange are also involved in a fierce fight to offer the fastest speed through their networks.
France Telecom-owned Orange has upgraded its FTTH network with speeds of up to 1Gbps using the XG-PON technology that allows four times faster downloaded speeds and doubles the upload speeds for fixed broadband customers.
Orange will also use the new technology to connect mobile base stations and boost its backbone capacity for its 4G network.
The company, which covers five million homes across Spain, has just completed the acquisition of Jazztel for which it has paid €3.4 billion. The deal brought together the third and fourth largest fixed operators in Spain.
