September 1, 2015

From David Del Valle in Madrid

Telefonica plans to turn its recently-acquired platform Canal Plus into a global pay-TV unit responsible for negotiating TV content for all the group’s regional platforms worldwide.

Following the example of Netflix, Telefonica is seeking to centralise all TV content negotiations on Canal Plus to have a stronger position in the International market and even produce and distribute its own content to other platforms (Telefonica  has its own production company, Telefonica Studios, and produces its own motor and sports content).

Telefonica hopes to grow in Latin America with a potential market of 600 million homes, according to the company. Currently, Telefonica has 8 million pay TV subscribers worldwide, with over 3 million in Spain, over 1.5 million in Brazil and with a leading position in Peru and operations in Venezuela, Colombia and Chile.
