Concurrent announces open-source transparent caching solution

October 14, 2015

Concurrent, a global provider of high-performance Linux and storage solutions, has announced it will open-source its transparent caching solution and launch a related suite of enterprise support services for commercial customers.  Branded as Laguna, Concurrent’s open-source transparent caching solution improves the quality of over-the-top (OTT) services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime TV, as well as dozens of other Internet content sources, by democratically caching popular content deep at the edge of service provider networks.  This improves service quality, minimizes transit costs, and reduces overall network congestion.

“With our open-source initiatives, we are empowering network operators to launch new technologies more quickly by lowering deployment costs and enabling them to participate in the advancement of the products they use,” said James Brickmeier, CMO of Concurrent.  “We are excited to share our transparent caching solution with a growing community of developers working to improve the quality of Internet based content services.”

“Open source projects for software-defined networking, scale-out storage, CDN, and now transparent caching are increasingly focused on serving the streaming media community,” said Dan Rayburn, Principal Analyst at Frost & Sullivan. “With the growth of OTT direct-to-consumer services, there is a strong need for solutions that can preserve network bandwidth and improve service reliability.”

Laguna integrates with Concurrent’s recently announced open-source content delivery network (CDN) solution, which is based on Apache Traffic Server™, Traffic Control, Ceph® storage, and Concurrent’s own software contributions.  It also works with the company’s Unified Content Delivery Solution, a full-featured CDN solution for delivering commercial video services to set-top boxes and Internet connected devices.

Concurrent’s enterprise support services for Laguna include:

·       A subscription-based service to regularly update cache definitions

·       24 x 7 x 365 call center support

·       Installation, integration, and training services

·       Custom engineering and consulting services

·       Factory integration of software on hardware appliances
