RAI and TIM in LTE Broadcast partnership

Italian public broadcaster RAI and mobile telephony operator TIM have partnered for LTE Broadcast trials.

On occasion on the closure of the 2015 Milan Expo, the two partners jointly offered visitors the possibility of trying out a Mobile TV service that provided access to live and on-demand content in HD, via the 4G network.

Using phablets (smartphones with displays of about 6 inches) prepared for the occasion, a selection of channels in full HD quality dedicated to the event and produced by RAI were made available. They included live coverage of the closing ceremony from the Open Air Theatre, a video story that retraces the most significant milestones of the Milan Expo and visual interventions at the ceremony.

The LTE Broadcast trials were conducted in partnership between RAI, Samsung and TIM (as official partners of Expo 2015) along with technology enablers Ericsson and Qualcomm.

The LTE Broadcast technology makes available video and multimedia content to a potentially unlimited number of mobile users simultaneously and also enables multiple TV channel reception in particularly crowded environments or densely populated metropolitan areas. Reception is possible via a range of terminals, from smart TVs to personal computers, smartphones and tablets, using both fixed and mobile transmission networks.
