Keepixo launches high-density, broadcast quality OTT transcoding solution on Kontron SYMKLOUD platform

April 19, 2016

Kontron, a global provider of Embedded Computing Technology (ECT), and Keepixo, a provider of software-based head-end solutions for IPTV and OTT, have announced a joint collaboration to launch a new high-density OTT transcoding solution that combines the Kontron SYMKLOUD Series of converged infrastructure platforms and Keepixo’s Genova software suite for OTT services.

Using the latest server CPU architectures with on-chip graphics media processing acceleration, the combined solution is able to transcode up to 144 HD channels in only 2 rack units (2U) while consuming less than 8W per transcoded service. This high density is achieved while guaranteeing best in class video quality and support for a broadcast-grade feature set such as popular subtitle and closed-caption formats and OTT streaming protocols.

High-density video transcoding introduces various levels of HW acceleration to off-load computationally intensive tasks. Keepixo’s Genova software suite makes use of media processing acceleration for low level encoding operations while keeping full control of high level tasks such as encoding strategy to achieve the highest video quality that is required for professional applications.

Genova Software family is a cloud-ready, high-performance and broadcast-quality software suite targeted at content and service providers. It includes all the components needed to build a multiscreen video workflow for OTT and IPTV services. Genova comprises a multi-rate live encoder, file transcoder for VOD assets and a multi-format OTT packager.

As a 2U converged infrastructure platform, SYMKLOUD unifies high density compute, storage and redundant network switches in an ultra-scalable, compact footprint. As a hybrid design approach, it incorporates the best of both carrier-grade High Availability (HA) features with the cloud economics of standard IT hardware. Up to 18 Intel Xeon or Core-i7 processors are supported across nine modular servers in a compact – short-depth 2U enclosure.

“The explosive growth of Internet video traffic has put pressure on video transcoding infrastructures to optimise bandwidth and power consumption. OTT service providers increasingly need high density transcoding solutions to control their cost of operations,” said Jerome Blanc, COO for Keepixo. “Thanks to our collaboration with Kontron, we can offer a platform that addresses our customers’ needs for density and power per transcoded service while meeting professional grade service level.”

“Advances in end user devices, higher resolutions, frame rates and color depth are pushing service providers to find more efficient infrastructure solutions to support increasing workflow densities,” said Benoit Robert, Strategy and Marketing, Kontron. “The tight integration of Keepixo Genova software suite and massively scalable and ultra-reliable x86 GPU resources makes for a compelling total cost of ownership.”
