BT Sport to broadcast Rooney testimonial

July 26, 2016

BT Sport will broadcast Wayne Rooney’s testimonial match live between his boyhood club Everton and the club he now captains, Manchester United, on August 3rd at Old Trafford.

The match to celebrate the England captain’s career will kick off live on BT Sport 1 and BT Sport Ultra HD at 8pm. At Wayne’s request all proceeds from the game will be donated to children’s’ charities, marking the start of a year of fundraising events by the Wayne Rooney Foundation aimed at raising £5 million for disadvantaged and vulnerable children.

The testimonial will serve as a tribute to Wayne Rooney after 520 appearances and 245 goals for United since joining the club in 2004. Ahead of the new Premier League season Rooney is only four goals behind Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goal scoring record at Manchester United and is also England’s all-time record goal scorer.

The match will be BT Sport ambassador Jose Mourinho’s first home match in charge of Manchester United and will also see the Emirates FA Cup – won for a record equalling 12th time last season – on display.

All proceeds from the Testimonial, celebrating Wayne Rooney’s 12 years at Manchester United, will be distributed through the Wayne Rooney Foundation to four chosen charity partners – the NSPCC, Claire House Children’s Hospice, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the Manchester United Foundation. Donations can be made via BT’s not-for-profit, free, online fundraising service, MyDonate, with BT also a principle partner of the testimonial.

Simon Green, head of BT Sport, said: “BT Sport is proud to be broadcasting this special charity event for football fans and is delighted to help raise money for the charities chosen by Wayne Rooney via BT’s MyDonate platform.”
