Portugal completes sports TV sharing deal

Portugal Telecom’s pay-TV unit Meo has joined the sports content sharing agreement, signed earlier this month by Portuguese operators Cabovisão, Nos and Vodafone.

Under this partnership, customers of the four pay-TV operators will get access to TV broadcasting rights for matches and club channels –  already acquired or to be acquired in the future by any of the parts.

This includes: access to Benfica TV and all Benfica and Boavista home matches (from the season 2016/2017); access to Sporting TV (from July 1st 2017) and Sporting home matches (from July 1st 2018); TV broadcasting rights for FC Porto home matches (also from July 1st 2018) and access to Porto Canal to all operators.

The agreement for reciprocal sharing of content and contracts with football clubs is still being analysed by Portugal’s Competition Authority.

In a related development, Cabovisão is planning to introduce a mobile telephony service this autumn, enabling it to offer a quadruple-play offering and compete more effectively with rival operators.
