Google cuts fiber

August 26, 2016

Google is said to be preparing to cut half the staff of Google Fiber as it turns its attention to wireless technologies.

According US reports Alphabet – the Google holding company – has targeting the 500 post cut after Fiber failed to meet sign-up targets for its high-speed broadband offering. Google Fiber was reported to have only 200,000 subs at the end of 2014 – Google initially targeted five million subscribers.

The WSJ reported Fiber was proving “more expensive than anticipated” with Alphabet now looking to use wireless technology rather than cables to connect homes in around 12 new metro areas.
