Nigeria’s Copyright Commission (NCC) staff say they have destroyed or confiscated several “broadcast devices” used in the illegal distribution of cable television signals in the North and South Bank areas of Makurdi in Benue State.

Trade mag CommunicationsWeek reports that the confiscations (estimated with a value of NGN 1.5 million) were conducted during an enforcement action against broadcast piracy from January 30th to February 1st.

Augustine Amodu, director of enforcement at NCC, said the three-day raid was carried out by a joint team of copyright officials, police and representatives from Multichoice Nigeria. He said several wires used for the illegal signal transmission were cut while signal boosters and senders were confiscated. Amodu said that the investigation is still going on and that culprits and their accomplices will be arrested and prosecuted.
