April 21, 2017

Intelsat, the global satellite operator, announced that as a result of its partnership with Encompass Digital Media, NASA TV became the first linear Ultra High Definition (UHD) channel available on Intelsat’s system for Latin American cable operators. Encompass delivers end-to-end video solutions worldwide to broadcast and media companies.

NASA TV provides coverage of NASA missions, launches, news conferences and special events. NASA TV, already using Galaxy 13 for North America distribution, is the newest addition to Intelsat’s four satellite Latin America cable distribution neighborhood, which currently delivers 77 of the 100 most watched channels in the region. The UHD channel is hosted on Intelsat 14 located at 315 degrees East. NASA TV is being added to the company’s line-up of the most powerful and coveted media neighborhoods in the region, expanding programmer’s ability to deliver top content to all of Latin America.

“Our DVB-S2 MCPC broadcast platform on Intelsat 14 is an optimum solution for customers who want to introduce UHD and 4K programming into the region,” said Carmen Gonzalez-Sanfeliu, Intelsat’s Regional Vice President, Latin America & the Caribbean. “NASA TV’s presence on Intelsat 14 demonstrates Intelsat’s position as the leader in bringing innovations in media distribution to its customers who serve the continent using Intelsat’s Latin America C-band neighborhoods. Our globalized network enables programmers to expand their distribution footprint.”

“We are pleased to see the expansion of NASA viewers into Latin America and to be delivering the channel in 4K is especially exciting,” states Vince Matherne, Chief Commercial Officer at Encompass. “It is an honor to continue to support NASA’s missions, and Intelsat’s fleet of global satellites provides the ideal distribution footprint for not only increasing NASA’s reach but also advanced transmission solutions.”
