Virgin warns 800,000 on modem cyber attack

June 26, 2017

Virgin Media is warning over 800,000 subscribers to update their passwords on routers after the device was found to be vulnerable to cyber attack.

The vulnerability in the Super Hub 2 was discovered by consumer protection organisation Which? during an investigation of connected devices in the home. The routers come with generic default passwords that are easy for hackers to guess.

Working with ethical hacker team SureCloud, Which? found that the device could be hacked in a matter of days. Virgin Media, which is in the process of contacting its customers to notify them via email and social media, described the risk as small.
