July 25, 2017

From David Del Valle in Madrid

The growth of pay-TV and online streaming services is taking TV ad revenues away from the largest FTA operators in Spain; namely Mediaset and Atresmedia.

In the first half of the year, Mediaset and Atresmedia earned €10 million less in ad revenues than the same period last year.

According to consultancy firm Infoadex, Atresmedia, owner of Antena 3 and La Sexta among others, had €472.5 million up to June, down €7million than the same period last year. Mediaset, owner of Tele 5 and Cuatro, made €482.4 million in ad revenues until June, down €3.9 million. Combined they lost €10 million in ad revenues above all the growth of the ad pie for pay TV and Internet streaming services.

Pay-TV channels increased their ad revenues by 17.4 per cent to June to €47.9 million. As for Internet TV services, TV ad revenues amounted to €242 million versus €223 million last year.
