Frontier Silicon brings Amazon Alexa to its smart radio and wireless speaker platform

September 4, 2017

Frontier Silicon, a provider of smart audio and digital radio solutions, announces that it is working on technologies which will allow its smart radios and wireless speakers to be controlled via Amazon’s Echo and Echo Dot devices.

By incorporating Amazon Alexa’s new Connected Speaker API, this solution will enable Alexa devices such as the Echo, Echo Dot, and Echo Show to control music on audio systems based on Frontier’s Venice 6 platform.

With the aid of Frontier’s class-leading UNDOK™ multi-room technology, users will be able to ask Alexa for music in any room in the house, or in multiple rooms at the same time.

The platform will offer multiple music services, including Amazon Music, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, and Pandora – with Spotify and SiriusXM due to be added in the coming months.

Consumers will be able to use voice commands to control content selection, volume settings, and functions such as next track, previous, pause, resume, repeat and shuffle.  They will also be able to control their FM or DAB digital radio via their Alexa device.

Over two million audio devices powered by Frontier’s Venice 6 smart radio platform are currently in the market.  Frontier’s new solution will allow rapid deployment of Alexa voice control on new products, and the solution will be offered as an over-the-air upgrade to existing products in the field.

Frontier is showcasing this technology at the IFA electronics trade fair in Berlin from 1st to 6th September.  Smart radio products with this new software are expected to be available from mid-2018.

Anthony Sethill, CEO, Frontier Silicon, said: “Voice technologies are transforming audio products.  By working with Alexa, Frontier is able to help its customers create smart radios and wireless speakers which can be part of this new generation of voice controlled audio devices.”
