Portugal’s Sport TV launching free 4K channel

Portugal’s pay-TV sports platform Sport TV will start regular broadcasts in 4K from October 1st, when it will air the top-flight football match between Sporting CP and FC Porto.
The chairman of the Board of Directors of Sport TV, Joaquim Oliveira, said that 30 games of both Portugal’s NOS League and Spain’s Liga will be broadcast in this format during the current season.
Subscribers to the Sport TV Premium package will be able to access Sport TV 4K – UHD TV on channel 420 of cable TV operators NOS, MEO (Portugal Telecom) and Vodafone Portugal. The channel will be free of charge until the end of the year.
Sport TV had been working on the 4K channel for more than a year and in the past conducted several test broadcasts, including live coverage of the UEFA Champions League in 4K.
Sport TV CEO, Nuno Ferreira Pires, said that 70 per cent of Sport TV’s customers have signed up for HD content. He added that he expects cable operator Nowo to add Sport TV 4K – UHD TV in the near future.
