Amazon reveals Prime Video 2017 viewing habits

January 3, 2018

Amazon has published data pertaining to its Prime Video streaming service available in over 240 countries and territories around the world – revealing things about subscriber habits in 2017 including the shows they love, when they stream and interesting coincidences between where they live and what they watch.

Facts about Prime Video and the milestones achieved in 2017 include:

  • Across the globe, the year ended with a bang, with the biggest streaming day of the year on December 30th. The top streamed series on Prime Video that day were The Grand Tour S2 and Golden Globe-nominated The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and the top streamed movies that day were The Big Sick and The Circle.
  • Among the top 50 cities with the highest number of viewers around the world, the city with the highest streaming hours per customer was Vienna, Austria. Amazon takes that as the ultimate compliment given Vienna’s sophisticated taste in art, architecture and food.
  • These cities watched the most of the following genres by average hour per capita:
    • Fantasy – London, England
    • Comedy – Vienna, Austria
    • Drama – Tokyo, Japan
    • Kids – Oldenburg, Germany
    • Mystery – Austin, Texas
  • Prime Video includes X-Ray, an exclusive feature powered by IMDb that allows customers to access actor and character information, identify music, browse trivia, explore bonus content and more during playback. Over the last year, the number of customers who engaged with X-Ray grew by 85 per cent. The US marketplace had the most X-Ray usage, followed by Germany and the UK, and Fire tablets had more X-Ray usage than any device. In 2017, these were the top 3 titles customers launched X-Ray on:
    • Daddy’s Home
    • Sneaky Pete S1
    • The Tick S1
  • On a per capita basis in the US, Prime members in the District of Columbia watched the most Thursday Night Football on Prime Video, followed by those in Washington state and Colorado. Tourists enjoyed a way to stream their hometown teams while visiting the nation’s capital, or nearly anywhere else they travelled in the US or abroad.
  • Prime Video was the first and only streaming service to launch titles in HDR10+.  Since the launch on December 13, the most streamed title in HDR10+ are The Grand Tour S2 and Jean-Claude Van Johnson.
  • Prime Video launched on Apple TV and has been a hit with customers around the world — it had the most first-week downloads of any app in the history of tvOS. The most streamed titles on Apple TV were The Grand Tour S2 and Golden Globe-nominated The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
  • Prime Video was the first subscription streaming service to bring home the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film for The Salesman, Best Actor for Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) and Best Original Screenplay for Kenny Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea). Amazon also made history as the first streaming to receive a nomination for Best Picture (Manchester by the Sea).
