The Spanish pay-TV market set new records in subscriptions and revenues in the first half of 2017. Data from the CNMC reveals that pay-TV surpassed 6.1 million subscribers and made €1.042 billion in revenues to June, more than FTA channels for the first time in the six month period.
Pay-TV subscribers grew by 4 per cent to 6,143,868 thanks to the various platforms promotions and their convergent packages.
Total pay-TV revenues reached €1.042 billion until June, up 14.7 per cent, and more than the €981 million made by the FTA duopoly of Mediaset and Atresmedia, which represent 95 per cent of FTA TV income.
Telefónica leads the market with its Movistar Plus which has 3.6 million subscribers and revenues of €842 million. Vodafone is second with 1.3 million subscribers and €113.6 million in revenues whereas Orange is third with 528,000 subscribers and €24.8 million in revenues.
Overall, according to the CNMC, the audiovisual sector in Spain had €3.071 billion in revenues until June, up 6.5 per cent, out of which €1.125 billion were ad revenues (up 1.2 per cent) €975 million pay TV fees (up 17 per cent) and €865 million state subsidies.
