Greece’s Mega TV facing closure

March 14, 2018

Mega TV is to be closed. The Greek broadcaster was once a major commercial TV player but failed to get a licence in the government’s restructuring of its free-to-air broadcasting.

Greece’s media supervisory body, the National Council of Radio & Television, voted on March 13th to instruct Mega TV to cease operations. Recently, and following its failure to win a licence, the channel has been transmitting repeats although local reports say staff are not being paid.

Mega TV started transmissions in 1989 and at one point was Greece’s most successful privately-owned channel.

The National Council says it will be instructing the country’s Digea network operator to stop Mega TV’s broadcasts.
