Large-screen display specialist LG says its new OLED factory output should mean production volumes of some 10 million units by 2020, and if the plans work out it could even mean 20 million units.

Large Display Monitor, a newsletter, quotes a report in Japan’s Nikkei that half of the company’s sales in the $2,000+ display segment were with OLED screens, and that is likely to rise to 70 per cent this year.

Lee Sang-hoon, a senior VP with LG Display, is quoted saying that his company would invest $18 billion in OLED technology by 2020, and this reflected strong demand in the Japanese market for premium TV sets where 92 per cent of sales  –  from a variety of suppliers – were OLED units.

Sony, for example, bought 200,000 panels last year, and is likely to buy 400,000 units in 2018 to incorporate into its own retail products.
