Discovery Communications is relocating its HQ from its Silver Spring, Maryland (near Washington DC) headquarters to a building in New York’s historic ‘Flatiron’ district in Midtown South, near other major media players including Facebook.

Discovery is already renting 160,000 square feet of office space in Manhattan but will take possession of a newly refurbished 250,000 sq ft office at 230 Park Avenue South in New York. They’ll move in to Park Avenue South in the autumn of 2019.

The need for extra space comes along with the completion of its $12 billion acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive.

Discovery currently employs around 1300 people based in Silver Spring, and the new property in New York will bring together staff located in various New York office buildings. Silver Spring will continue to house some functions including government relations and Discovery Education.

“The New Discovery is transforming into a different kind of global media company, and where and how we work is a critical foundation for our future success and growth,” said David Zaslav, President/CEO at Discovery. “We are energised by our fantastic new home in New York – the media capital of the world – where we will write our company’s next chapter. We look forward to bringing our world-class employees together in a creative and collaborative workspace in one of Manhattan’s most vibrant and dynamic neighbourhoods.”
