Norigin Media trials 4K cloud origin services for TV

June 19, 2018

Norigin Media’s hosted transcoding platform, Cloudncoder has successfully trialed 4K cloud origin services for live or linear TV channels in partnership with a Scandinavian cable operator. While content is limited and investments are high for such needs, the cloud solution will be offered to broadcasters and operators across Europe.

The formatting of 4K video requires effort to find the right balance between the adaptive bitrates within the transcoding profiles ahead of packaging in HLS or DASH formats. HEVC codec has been utilised to ensure bandwidth efficiencies for streaming distribution.

Broadcasters and pay-TV operators who offer 4K channels will be able to utilise the TV platform to capture, transcode and package linear feeds or live events. Cloudncoder offers a hosted TV platform for linear OTT services and offers support for multi-DRM, catch-up and DVR (digital video recording) ahead of a chosen content delivery network (CDN). The platform is used by tier1 operators across Northern Europe including Deutsche Telekom and local Scandinavian pay-tv operators.

“4K is still new to commercial deployments and there is a lack of tested solutions. At such an instance, Cloudncoder fills the need for quick deployments during this time” says Ajey Anand, CEO of Norigin Media. He adds “We have seen all our customers upgrade linear channels to Full HD in the cloud and this is a natural step rather than investing in costly new encoding platforms ahead of a business case”
