Spain: Mediaset fails to profit from World Cup rights

July 4, 2018

From David Del Valle in Madrid

The early exit of Spain’s National team is having a hugely negative impact on Mediaset Spain which hoped to benefit from the World Cup TV rights.

The company paid over €40 million for FTA broadcast rights all the matches. It aimed to get between €2.5 and 3 million per broadcast match of the National team, according to El Economista, but now all expectations have failed. It is estimated that Mediaset will get around €800,000 per broadcast match (in terms of ad revenues) an insufficient amount to make the World Cup TV transmissions profitable.

In June, Mediaset Spain received €93.2 million in revenues, versus €88.4 million the same month last year, an overall increase of 5.5 per cent.

With Spain’s exit, revenues are expected to drop dramatically putting at risk the Mediaset investment for the TV rights.
