Indonesia agrees to pay Avanti

July 11, 2018

Back on June 7th, the London Court of International Arbitration awarded specialist satellite operator Avanti Communications the sum of $20.075 million, in a final determination of a long-running dispute between Avanti and the Indonesian government.

A statement on July 10th from Avanti to the London Stock Exchange said: “Due to administrative delays from the London Court of International Arbitration in the release of the Award, Avanti and the Government of Indonesia have agreed to extend the payment date to 14 August 2018, to ensure that the Government of Indonesia has sufficient time to complete its internal regulatory administration to enable payment to be made. The Government of Indonesia has confirmed to Avanti that it intends to satisfy the Award in full.”

As recently as June 19th it appeared that the Indonesian Defense Ministry was likely to challenge the Court’s decision. That is now not the case.

The argument concerned a satellite which Avanti had leased – complete with its L-band payload – to the Indonesians and moved it in space to the 123 degrees East orbital position in order to secure – for the Indonesian government – its ‘rights’ to the slot.
