Netflix introduces Smart Downloads
July 11, 2018
Having launched the Download feature in 2016, making it possible for its members to take their stories with them wherever they go, Netflix has now introduced Smart Downloads. When users finish watching a downloaded episode, Smart Downloads will delete it, and then automatically download the next episode.
“We know how annoying it can be to go through all your apps and delete files you no longer need; we also understand that when it comes to Netflix, the faster you can get to the next episode you want to watch, the better,” writes Cameron Johnson, Director of Product Innovation in the Netflix Blog. “Whether it is smart downloading or viewing a mobile preview, we realise the best part of Netflix is connecting with the stories you will love in an easier and more fun way,” he adds.
“We also want to emphasise that giving consumers more control over their entertainment experience is at the heart of everything we do, and members can choose when they want to use Smart Downloads,” he advises. Smart Downloads is initially available on Android phones and tablets. The Smart Downloads feature only turns on when connected to Wi-Fi, so users’ data plans will never be used, and it won’t impact device storage, because it will always delete the last watched episode before downloading the next one.
