NBCU to pay streaming viewers?

August 10, 2018

NBC Universal is rumoured to be planning a VoD service that pays users to watch their content.

According to a report in The Information, the Comcast-owned media company is plotting a streaming service known tentatively as ‘Watch Back’ that will give out rewards that viewers can redeem for gift certificates. It will reportedly feature TV shows and web series from NBC Universal’s networks, such as NBC and Bravo, and possibly other sources.

The Information said that Watch Back isn’t an attempt to compete against the likes of Netflix, but more of a marketing effort meant to drum up interest in NBCU’s shows.

The service wouldn’t have any original content it would mostly feature series premieres and news clips, which will serve as tasters for NBCU’s offerings. The service could also use titles from other networks to serve ads for similar shows aired on the company’s networks.
