Movistar seeks Amazon Prime alliance

Telefónica’s pay-TV platform Movistar is reportedly in talks with Amazon to integrate Amazon Prime Video into its TV offer in Spain.

A possible deal with Amazon would be similar to the one reached with Netflix earlier this year whereby the streaming service will become part of Movistar Plus as an integrated service. A deal could be in place by the end of the year.

With the move, Movistar aims to strengthen its cinema and TV series content to challenge Vodafone which, after losing the football TV rights, is relying on this content to capture subscribers.

Meanwhile, Telefónica is already offering Netflix as integrated service in countries including Colombia, Ecuador and the UK. In UK, through O2, the it is offering Netflix free of charge for a year.
