Spain: 12m a day watch Movistar Plus

Telefónica’s pay-TV platform Movistar Plus is consolidating its leadership in Spain with 12 million viewers a day and more than 4 million subscribers.

The company claims that its TV consumption has increased by 10 per cent over the last year with VoD gaining ground, now claiming 20 per cent of all watched content (up from 5 per cent in 2013).

The president of Telefónica España, Emilio Gayo, said that “TV is key” in the company’s convergent offers as 4 out of 5 subscribers say they are loyal to Movistar thanks to the TV offer – which has an audience share of 14 per cent in daily prime time. The company plans to launch around 12 new original TV series in 2019.

In October, Movistar will launch a new user interface, which will be more intuitive, according to the company, with more video graphics in the EPG and a new content structure. The UI will allow subscribers to have up to five different profiles storing their favourite programmes. It will also launch the Movistar Kids app that will allow parents to control what their kids watch on TV as well add new functionalities such us the latest 7 days and the recording service on mobile devices.

Along with this, it will launch a new 4K-equipped STB with Ethernet connectivity, UX port and with the voice assistant Aura. Movistar plans to reach 1 million STB devices by mid next year and complete the renewal of its 4.2 million subscribers within 2 years.

In 2019, Movistar will launch a new remote control with Bluetooth, direct access buttons and voice control. Also, it will also launch Movistar Cloud that will allow subscribers to store photos on the cloud and look back at them on TV screens.
