An estimated 3.3 million Portuguese households subscribed to pay-TV services at the end of July 2018, according to the Telecommunications Barometer published by Marktest.

This figure represents 81.9 per cent of total households in the country. The pay-TV penetration rate has grown significantly when compared to the 46.4 per cent registered in 2006, but reveals a slight decrease compared to 2017, when it reached 82.7 per cent.

In terms of access, the number of homes with fibre optic has increased. Conversely, the number of households with access through cable has decreased in the same period.

Pay-TV subscription is higher in households where the age of the ICMR (the individual contributing the highest income) is below 55, in the Greater Lisbon Region or among the higher social classes.
