Analysis: Narcos 5th most in-demand SVoD series

October 5, 2018

Research from audience demand measurement specialist Parrot Analytics has found that production house Gaumont’s hit drama series Narcos currently ranks as the fifth most in-demand digital original series in the world for 2018. In addition, anticipation for the upcoming fourth season of the drama series is driving demand beyond that of any previous season’s debut.

Three successful seasons of Narcos have propelled the series into the ranks of the most popular digital original shows in the world. During its launch in September 20177, Parrot Analytics found that Narcos season 3 was the most popular Digital Original title of any SVoD service in the US. During the same week, Narcos also registered as the #1 Digital Original in most major markets, including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Brazil, Canada, Australia, India and China.

According to Parrot Analytics’ most-recent data, US demand for Narcos: Mexico (season 4) is accelerating ahead of its release on November 16th. By comparing US pre-release demand data for season 3 with season 4 over the same 30-day period ahead of launch, Parrot Analytics has found that audience demand for the forthcoming season is on average 318 per cent greater.

“We have every indication that the upcoming Narcos: Mexico will be the most popular yet,” said Courtney Williams, European Regional Director, Parrot Analytics. “The release of the trailer for the new season served to super charge interest and we have seen a considerable spike in demand. With Parrot Analytics’ real-time audience demand measurement system we are able to chart the impact of marketing and promotional activities on demand for the series, which is key for a company like Gaumont with series moving into multiple seasons.”

Gaumont retained Parrot Analytics in 2017 to quantify cross-platform, country-specific audience demand for its roster of established and new television shows and has recently renewed its agreement with the company for another year.

“Our ability to track demand for our shows worldwide has given us invaluable insights that not only support our sales efforts, but serve to justify continued and new investments in production and marketing. Being able to have this information at our fingertips has been essential to keep Gaumont competitive in an increasingly crowded content market,” said Vanessa Shapiro, President, Worldwide TV Distribution and Co-Productions.
