Telefónica’s pay-TV platform, Movistar Plus, is cutting prices on football packages in Spain in an attempt to boost subscriptions and recover the high TV rights costs.

From the end of the month, new subscribers will be able to have access to all football matches for €65 a month instead of the current €80. The company will launch a new package called Movistar Fusión Base, including TV channels, premium football (El Partidazo) and in-house content for €65 with a speed of 100 Megabytes and €77 in case of 600 Megabytes.

Movistar will also reshape its convergent packages with more flexible options. Fusión Total with 80 TV channels, 8 football matches and the European football tournaments, will allow subscribers to watch El Partidazo (the best football match every week) along with the other matches from La Liga plus European tournaments at no extra cost.

Movistar seeks to make subscribers loyal to its packages including football at cheaper prices to reduce its churn rate, 25 per cent lower than its rivals, according to the company.

Movistar currently has 4.5 million customers, with a pay-TV market share of 60 per cent in Spain.
