Five million French TV viewers aged four and above watch online content on a daily basis, be it live or catch-up – an increase of 28 per cent over two years – reports Médiamétrie.

Among them, 3 million watch from a TV set via an IPTV connection. This growth has been driven by mobility and the use of smartphone since the share of the population watching online TV from a mobile phone has doubled over the period according to the figures from Médiamétrie’s TV survey. Almost 2 million viewers exclusively watch TV from a computer, a mobile or a tablet.

The total amount of people watching TV daily in France, either online or not, reaches 42.7 million, Médiamétrie notes.

Some 65 per cent of time spent watching TV online is dedicated to live feeds, and to access this content, French viewers mostly (46.8 percent) use the broadcasters’ own websites and apps. OTT players such as Molotov or myCanal are also popular and account for 26.4 percent of the online viewing time.

The survey adds that 3 million of French people aged 15 and above are both ‘regular’ TV viewers and SVoD users, whatever the screen may be. This is up 5.6 per cent from 2.6 per cent a year ago. Their average age is 31 years-old.
