Apple plotting TV dongle?

November 23, 2018

Apple could be preparing to launch a TV dongle according to reports, giving more users access to its new streaming service.

Apple already has Apple TV on the market – a set-top streaming device – but now seems primed to launch a portable device similar to Google Chomecast and Amazon Fire TV, which have both proven hugely popular among consumers. The devices plug straight into the back of a TV, allowing online content to be viewed on any set.

According to a report by The Information, Apple plans to launch an affordable streaming device that would encourage more customers to access its soon-to-launch OTT service. The Apple TV 4K device currently retails for £199, whereas TV dongles traditionally sell for around £30.

The move would make sense as Apple seeks to take on the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video with its own streaming service – which is rumoured to launch in over 100 countries in the spring of next year. It has invested in some high-value content, including resurrecting the Steven Spielberg anthology Amazing Stories and a drama series about a network morning show which will star Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.
