Bitmovin: “Tackling video latency will be a priority in 2019”

November 30, 2018

Stefan Lederer, CEO and Co-Founder of Bitmovin, the online video technology specialist, has shared his Top 3 predictions for how content owners will be using technology to enhance and differentiate consumer experiences in 2019,

“There’s no doubt that 2019 will see even more live sports being streamed to fans, more studios launching direct-to-consumer online streaming services and continued exponential growth in video on social channels.,” commented Lederer.

His predictions are:

1. Netflix-style VoD with high-quality adaptive streaming will come to the masses, levelling the playing field for consumer expectations. Per-title video encoding (where encoding parameters are automatically determined by content type), was once only for the big guns but in 2019 it will increasingly be used by everyone to optimise quality for every single piece of content.”

2. The industry has always been super-focused on video quality. In 2019, tackling latency will be a bigger priority, driven by expectations for live sports experiences. The truth is that tackling delays can actually create issues for online video robustness and the resulting quality of experience. To avoid this we’re going to see service providers putting much more emphasis on having effective video analytics in place, so they can adjust settings in real-time as they dial latency down.”

3. AV1 will start to roll out to millions of viewers worldwide. The very biggest players in online video will take the lead, with premium VoD services first – as they can spread the cost of compute resources while the wider market begins mass adoption of AV1. In general, 2019 will accelerate the trend towards a multi-codec world as all content providers select the best solution for different scenarios.”
