Discovery launches Dplay Plus in Italy

April 9, 2019

Discovery is expanding its digital services in Italy, with the launch of Dplay Plus, a premium subscription streaming service offering access to content from its pay-TV brands Discovery Channel, Discovery Science, Animal Planet and ID.

This new SVoD service complements Discovery Italia’s existing, successful Dplay AVoD product which is nearly four years old and includes content from its free-to-air portfolio (Real Time, DMAX, NOVE, Giallo, Motor Trend, Food Network, K2and Frisbee) – Dplay reaches an average of 2.1 million Italian users every month.

Discovery Italia is the third biggest commercial broadcaster by audience in Italy.

Dplay Plus is available through a dedicated app, and can be downloaded at App Store and Google Play, through Samsung, Apple and Android smart TV applications. Discovery Channel and Discovery Science are available as linear channels, VoD and catch up on demand. The service will offer the best factual entertainment content, box sets as well as some exclusive premieres before the linear window.

This latest SVoD announcement follows the recent launch of Dplay Netherlands in February – a subscription only streaming service, making available premium brands; Discovery Channel, TLC and ID. Last week Discovery announced a 10 year global content partnership with the BBC (excluding UK, Ireland and Greater China), making Discovery the exclusive SVoD home of the BBC’s landmark natural history content and the home of premium factual. This service launches by 2020 and will form a key part of Discovery’s unique and growing portfolio of direct-to-consumer services that will enable fans to ‘view and do.’

Kasia Kieli, President & Managing Director, Discovery EMEA, said: “It is part of our strategy to create digital services across EMEA for curious and passionate fans of all generations.   Building on the success of our existing player in Italy, we are launching Dplay Plus, a premium subscription service, giving viewers access to high quality content, whenever and wherever they want it.”
