Canal+ chooses Cisco CDN; TVbeat data

April 10, 2019

Cisco has announced that Canal+ has strategically chosen to base its new Content Delivery Network (CDN) on the Cisco NCS 5516 Series platform, using Cisco IOS XR software.

Technology disruption within the media market is rapid, with network requirements and expectations changing quickly. End-users are expecting to obtain more and more content with zero delay. Companies like CANAL+ need to adopt technology that will allow them to be more flexible and agile in the way they create and distribute that content.

As the highest traffic peak recorded by Canal+ last year was 500Gb/s, the new CDN has been designed to deliver 1Tb/s + on day one. It will be supported by twin POPs to deliver both live and on-demand content.

“We needed a future-proof CDN network architecture to not only handle strong traffic growth but also to increase customer satisfaction by providing highly resilient services.” said Benoît Chemin, Network Architect at Canal+. “By constantly evolving to integrate leading-edge technology advancements, Cisco helps us better address new requirements from changing market conditions.”

“Canal+ Group is a leader in provision of premium-content and themed networks,” said Sumeet Arora, Senior Vice President of Service Provider Networking, Cisco. “We are always delighted to collaborate with industry leaders and are confident that the NCS 5516 platform will help Canal+ deliver awesome experiences to their customers.”

Meanwhile, TVbeat, a TV data activation software company, has been selected by Canal+ Group to streamline and harmonise its first-party TV viewership data across all its TV channels to provide greater insights for content planning and scheduling.

Working with Canal+, TVbeat will ingest, process and unify all TV linear and non-linear viewership data from set-top boxes and OTT sources at a census level and output towards sophisticated TV reporting and measurement visualization tools. Canal+ will be able to understand TV audience behaviour and actions in channels and programmes across all devices, giving insights from audience behaviour.

“TVbeat gives our staff across all TV business areas a one-stop shop for getting insights from our viewership data across myCANAL and Canal+ set-top boxes. With this insight we can now make much more informed and accurate decisions about how we can utilise viewership behaviour across the various audience segments, reduce churn and run more effective promotions”, said Aymeric Augustin, SVP Data of Canal+.

TVbeat offers insights on time-shifted and on-demand viewing, as well as for live programmes. It can be configured to provide analysis across any segment such as audience/demographic, programme, series, genre groups and subscriber attributes like subscriber package. Custom reporting can be easily generated across any range of data relevant to the business need of each CANAL+ department. CANAL+ teams therefore will have the opportunity to understand viewer behaviour, to inform scheduling and content decisions.

“We are very excited to partner with a such an innovative and leading French TV player”, said Abbas D. Tahzib, Chief Revenue Officer at TVbeat. “Our TV data activation software suite helps CANAL+ enhance the TV experience across any device and enables it to deepen collaboration with its broadcasters.”
