The French SVoD market doubled in 2018, spurred by platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

According to the CNC’s annual Cinema, TV and Video round-up, the total turnover of SVoD platforms was approximately €500 million in 2018, up from €250 million in 2017.

The SVoD market now exceeds the physical video sector and accounts for 60 percent of sales. Some 39 per cent of internet users in the country are SVOD users. The number of SVOD subscribers is estimated at around 6 million, with the bulk of them using Netflix. Nearly half (48 per cent) of the French internet watched Netflix content in 2018, way ahead of Orange (23.6 percent) and MyTF1 VOD (19.5 per cent).

“Netflix is now generating in France a daily audience equal to that of the fifth DTT channel” the CNC commented.

Meanwhile, the YouTube-Netflix OTT video tax – set up in early 2018 to help fund local content – brought in €10 million, including €8 million from pay platforms.
