Freesat upgrades datacasting systems with Icareus

May 23, 2019

Icareus, the Helsinki-based broadcast and online video partner, has delivered its Icareus Playout platform to Freesat, the free-to-air satellite television service – a joint venture between the BBC and ITV.

Icareus’ solution will allow Freesat to replace their legacy system with a future roadmap to expand their hybrid, broadcast and broadband services (HbbTV).  Icareus Playout CS Carousel server is used to deliver various data components, EPG and over-the-air updates to Freesat satellite receivers.

Icareus’ Director Mikko Karppinen said: “Icareus Playout has been widely deployed by DTH providers over the years and Freesat has pushed us even further with our product platform. We are very honoured to be part of Freesat’s technical stack and to enable them to provide better TV experience.”

Freesat’s Head of Operations Paul Hobbs added: “Icareus Playout has enabled Freesat to push on with our plans for Hbbtv and IP channels at a reasonable cost. Mikko and his team have provided Freesat with quick, reliable support that provides confidence for the future.”
