India’s Dish TV wants extra 1.4m subs

Dish TV, not content with its March 2018 merger with Airtel’s Videocon d2h and the possibility of another, even larger, consolidation with Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio cellular operation, is also looking to add a net 1.4 million additional subscribers this year.

It could be a big ‘ask’ given that its Q4 numbers added a modest 47,000 net new additions.

CEO Jawahar Goel, talking to IndianTelevision, said the enlarged pay-TV group was attacking the task with vigour, and would be helped by a dedicated India Cricket channel which will run through the sports season.

Also in the marketing mix is its new OTT platform ‘Watcho’ which already claims more than 2 million access sessions despite only having 20 shows on the service.

He says that a minimum acceptable net new number would be 700,000 for the year.
