Altice Portugal, RTP 5G broadcast

June 18, 2019

From Branislav Pekic in Rome

Altice Portugal has partnered with public broadcaster RTP on Portugal’s first TV broadcast using 5G technology.

During the trial, a pre-commercial 5G ecosystem was activated from the client terminal to service platforms. A router was developed to support the new technology, consisting of a new 5G wireless control network and a series of active antennas. The system makes it possible to achieve a speed of up to 1.7 Gbps.

Alice Portugal obtained a provision licence from the National Communications Authority (Anacom) for the launch.

The trial took part during the Moche XL Esports by Huawei, the biggest electronic sports event in the Iberian Peninsula, during which Altice Portugal guaranteed full coverage of the Altice Arena with 5G.

Portugal has yet to reach a decision on the 5G licence model and the Government is set to present a national 5G coverage strategy in September.

The release of the 700 MHz band should start in the last quarter of 2019 and run until June 30th 2020, which will imply a migration of DTT to a new frequency band.
