Italian sports broadcaster Sportitalia has launched four HD channels on DTT via HbbTV technology.

Having previously offered just one sports channel in standard definition, the broadcaster is now transmitting four free-to-air HD channels on national DTT channel 60 as part of the SI Smart package. The expanded offer is available to viewers that have a Smart TV set enabled for HbbTV 2.0 functions.

Viewers who do not have a HbbTV 2.0 enabled TV but still have a Smart TV connected to the Internet, will still be able to see the new channels by downloading the SI Smart application.

The first channel, Sportitalia HD, broadcasts the same programmes that were already aired by the SD channel.

SI Solo Calcio, a channel dedicated to football, aims to broadcast 1,000 football matches per year, including Italian Serie C, the Swedish, Danish, Scottish and Belgian championships, as well as the Danish Cup, the Scottish Cup and the French Cup.

Si Motori is dedicated to motorsports, with coverage of the Rallycross, Speedway, Enduro, X-Trail, TCR and Nascar races.

The fourth channel, SI Live 24, broadcasts all the latest sports news live.

In the DTT market, there is little competition among sports channels, as the only other broadcasters are Rai Sport and Supertennis.
