Chinese media group StarTimes is putting 200 million Kenyan shillings (€172m) into new Kenyan programming.
StarTimes CEO Andy Wang told journalists in Nairobi that StarTimes the investment is for the development of Rembo TV to air content “developed by Kenyans for Kenyans”. The channel will also be beamed to Tanzania and Uganda both on DTH and terrestrial TV.
“The company has responded to the growing appeal for authentic Kenyan content that subscribers can easily relate with as it rolls out exciting fresh shows that are expected to sustain the channel’s subscriber appeal moving forward,” Wang said.
Rembo TV is StarTimes’ key entertainment channel and features content from 30 local content development companies. Rembo TV’s main focus is reality programming with content spread over the two main linguistic groups, quoted at 60 per cent in Swahili and 30 per cent in English.
