Spain’s top flight football league La Liga predicts that OTT will significantly grow over the next seven years to represent half of the global revenues in the TV market in 2026.

Today, according to La Liga, OTT represents 8 per cent of revenues in the global TV market, versus 92 per cent from pay-TV operators, with plans to reach 20 per cent in the two-year period 2020-22.

José Carlos Franco, Technology director at La Liga, explained to news agency EFE that the launch of the OTT service LaLigaSports eight months ago was the first step in preparing for the OTT boom.

“We are now comfortable with the current model but we do not know the evolution of the market and we must be ready,” he said.

LaLigaSports now has 410,000 subscribers who watch over 30 sports in the platform with 1,145 sports events in the season. La Liga has invested €7.5 million in its own OTT platform.
