Panasonic pulls plug on LCD
November 22, 2019
By Chris Forrester
Panasonic, the Japanese electronics giant, has said it will stop making its own LCD panels, and shift some 500 staff from the division to other segments of its business.
Panasonic has already closed its LCD television business (in 2016) and this decision covers the manufacture of LCDs at its Himeji facility in western Japan and for its car navigation devices and medical usage.
The closure is planned to be gradual and will end in 2021. Executives at Panasonic say that tough competition from foreign-made LCD have left them no choice but to close the division.
