Germany: RTL scores Europa & Conference League rights
January 27, 2020
RTL, the German FTA commercial broadcaster, has acquired the exclusive rights in the country to the UEFA Europa League and the newly-created Europa Conference League for the new cycle, from the 2021-22 season to 2023-24.
RTL will broadcast both club competitions on its RTL and Nitro channels, as well as on its streaming platform TVNow. There will be 282 matches per season across both competitions.
Bernd Reichart, CEO of Mediengruppe RTL, speaking to German daily Handelsblatt, that the move was a “strong statement in times when the bidding competition for sports rights is more intense than ever and fewer and fewer games are freely accessible to fans”.
DAZN is the current Europa League rights holder in the country, but will now have no matches from the competition come 2021.
