Report: Over half of French viewers have pay-TV
January 27, 2020
From Pascale Paoli-Lebailly in Paris
Over half (54 per cent) of French viewers subscribe to at least one pay-TV service. This is a nine per cent increase on 2018, according to data from the Harris barometer on French pay-TV, which says the increase is largely due to the growth of SVoD subscriptions.
SVoD is seen a complement to existing pay-TV offerings for many. Some 36 per cent of SVoD subscribers also have a traditional pay-TV service. A quarter of viewers have at least two distinct pay TV services whilst 12 per cent report having more than three.
The data places Canal+ as the best known pay-TV service in the country, followed by Netflix, beIN Sports, OCS and RMC Sport. Netflix is the leading SVoD service but Amazon Prime Video is gaining ground, and is now recognised by 68 per cent of French viewers.
